Residents of the Marin Healthcare District own Marin General Hospital (MGH). In 1948, residents authorized the District to build MGH and the District issued bonds to do so. Thus, local property owners paid for its initial construction and equipment. Community donations built the second phase, and the District Board issued bonds for the new wing. The entirety of Marin General Hospital has been designed, built and paid for with public financing, and the public has always been in control of the construction and design process. It is important to protect, maintain and revitalize this valuable public investment. Future bonds to update and maintain the buildings will be well worth the community investment.
How did Sutter Health Come to Manage MGH?
In a controversial 1985 decision tainted with conflicts of interest, the Marin Healthcare District leased MGH to a private corporation that today is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sutter Health, one of the largest, most profitable healthcare corporations in the US.
